9:00 Bike Ride: Free on the Montour Trail to the Airport Connector This ride is about 12 miles in total on fairly flat local roads starting at the Enlow Ball park trailhead of the Montour Trail, going to the Greater Pittsburgh International Airport, and returning via the same route (six miles out, six miles back). It is being held in conjunction with the first annual Pittsburgh Cycling Expo, a benefit for the Montour Trail Council, held immediately following the ride at the Pittsburgh Airport Mariott Hotel on Aten Road (see www.pghcyclingexpo.com for details). The ride will go at the pace of the slowest rider - no drop.
The Montour Trail Council has been able to establish a bicycle route into (and, of course, out of) Pittsburgh International Airport. The Grand Opening will be in Spring 2012, but we have permission to use it now -- that is, we now have a "soft" opening. That means that you can plan your 2012 tours to bike directly to or from Pittsburgh Airport. Read about the Airport Connector
The new Montour Trail Airport Connector connects the Enlow Ball Park (aka Five Points) trailhead of the Montour Trail to the Airport, a distance of a bit over 6 miles. Along the way (about 1.5 miles from the airport) the Connector travels a short distance on Clinton Rd, so people who just want to start a road tour don't need to go all the way over to the Montour Trail. Please note that the Connector runs through the airport security area, except for the short stretch on public Clinton Rd. It is important to stay on the road and refrain from loitering in the airport security area. The ride will begin promptly at 9:00 am. WPW Ride Leader: Kevin Craig 412-708-4918
10:00 am - Cycling Expo: $5 Donation at the Door (vendor Area) See many Vendor Exibits from trail builders and cycling retailers.
2:00 pm Entertainment: $35 Luncheon, Zaney Cycling and Tubular Fashion Show, Trail Updates, Vendor Area Register Online
Luncheon: The banquet room has a limited seating area so, buy your tickets early. This event starts out with a plated luncheon served on round tables with a cash bar. Get to know cycling experts and fellow cyclists who love to ride.
Fashion Show: The highlight of this show are the fashions made from locally donated bike tubes. Tubular fashions made from bicycle related accessories. This entertainment is also educational as we present cycle apparel fashions from several popular brands. The idea is to provide information on current cyclewear function and options for all sized riders including tall and big fellows, plus women and children. The fashions will be available in 2012 at your local retailers.
Trails Updates: Guest speakers Mary Shaw and Roy Weil will present information on the airport connector, popular Pittsburgh trails, bike touring with GAP/C&O and volunteer trail work
